Poetry

I think the thing I like best about poems is when they give words to something I’ve experienced and never articulated. That’s what Shopping List does—uses the humble shopping list to talk about romancing, failed relationships, and the steadiness of partnership. I love the four different lists of ingredients—one meant to seduce, another meant to offend, another that represents what a beautiful everyday dinner could be (without any expectation but deliciousness), and a fourth—skim, bananas, peanut butter, prunes— that is so ordinary as to be almost funny, and the poet does make it funny.
